Hi! My name is Rodrigo Hernangómez. I was born and raised in Madrid, where I also got my M.Sc. in Telecommunication Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid after an exchange year in Munich.

My PhD took me all the way to Berlin, where I currently work as a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunication, Heinrich Hertz Institute. My research interests lie in the intersection of wireless communications, radar, and machine learning.

Apart from that, I am also deeply interested in other topics dealing with digital art, music information retrieval and image and sound. As a matter of fact, most projects on this site are related to these.

Why Science of Uselessness?

Because, as Torcuato Luca de Tena wrote, “Art is the science of uselessness”.

Education

Technische Universität Berlin

(2019-2025)

I received my PhD (Dr.-Ing.) degree (summa cum laude) from the TU Berlin. My doctoral thesis “Wireless Communication and Sensing: From Integration Challenges to Cross-Domain Learning” was supervised by Prof. Sławomir Stańczak at the Network Information Theory Chair. You can read more about my research here.

Technische Universität München

(2016-2017)

I finished my Master’s during an Erasmus exchange year at TUM, where I also wrote my Master’s thesis “Requirements and Partitioning of Otoacoustic Emission Measurement Algorithms”.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid

(2011-2017)

I received my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees for Telecommunication Engineering from UPM in 2015 and 2017, respectively. During the end of the Bachelor and the beginning of the Master’s, I also collaborated with the Department of Electronic Engineering at the BQ Chair and at the B105 Electronic Systems Lab. In the former, I developed a proof of concept for a wireless IoT monitoring system, whereas the B105 Lab allowed me to investigate digital signal processing algorithms for audio equalization and calibration with its high-end loudspeakers, “Ofelia”.
